In front of a large and appreciative crowd – including Tigers first-teamers Tom Croft, Ed Slater, Sam Harrison and Vereniki Goneva – on a chilly evening at the home of the Leicester Tigers, Nuneaton collected the Laurence Fenton County Colts Cup with a 34-25 victory over Burton before Hinckley beat Lutterworth in the senior men’s final.
Lutts drew first blood with a try from hooker Warren Tebb after 23 minutes and were good value for their lead against their National League opponents.
But Hinckley levelled the scores within five minutes with a strong finish from wing Devon Constant on the left and that is how it stayed at half-time.
Constant added a second after 12 minutes of the second half, finishing from a tap penalty, and he played an important part in the next score as his break set up full-back Josh Smith who ran a fine line to finish before also adding the kick to stretch the lead to 17-5 with almost an hour played.
Lutterworth were still in the contest, though, and Hinckley had to wait until the closing minutes to add another score, with centre Phil Brocken finishing a strong attack on the left to run out 24-5 victors.
Nuneaton scored six tries in their 34-25 victory over Burton in the Colts Cup Final, but had to overcome determined opponents and survive a fightback which twice saw their lead cut to just four points.
