Born in Oxford, Gadney spent a decade as a player with Leicester Tigers and earned a reputation for his forceful breaks from scrum-half. He scored 63 tries for the club. He became the first Leicester player to captain England, leading them to the Triple Crown in 1933/34, and also led Tigers for two seasons. He gained 14 England caps.
