Although capped just once by England, in the penultimate year of a lengthy career, Sid Penny held the Tigers appearance record for more than 60 years until finally overtaken by David Matthews.
He made his debut in 1895 and spent 15 years in the Leicester team. Now a century on from his final game, he is still second on the club’s all-time appearance list after 495 games.
Penny played in a record 10 Midland Counties Cup-winning teams, including eight in a row, and had the distinction of losing just once in 40 cup ties in a Tigers shirt.
