Hudson takes valuable experience from defeat

Following a tough loss against Bristol Bears, senior coach Tom Hudson is looking at building from a fierce start to the contest.

"We take the first 15 minutes as a positive. We want to give credit to Bristol, we fully believe they're firm title contenders this year and we are happy to come away having tested ourselves against the best.

"We knew it would be a tough time. Yet we more than matched them in those opening 15 minutes, so for that to be the case we're pleased with that.

"Our challenge is to extend that time to 30, 40 and then 80 minutes of dominance. That comes through experience and through building our fitness levels".

With this the third round of the Allianz Cup, Tigers have only one more game, at Mattioli Woods Welford Road against Exeter Chiefs, before the Allianz Premiership Women's Rugby season gets underway. In that time, Hudson knows there will be a big shift in focus between today's match and when the two sides clash in the league.

"As of right now, with our programme in its infancy, 85% of our time together has to be about establishing what we want to do, how we want to play, with 15% of that time dedicated to opposition analysis and how we can look to dismantle them.

"With the need in our group for growth, we need to spend that time on ourselves.

"When we're into the season proper, what I will look to is that percentage shifting, so we can focus more on dissecting a sides strengths and weaknesses; however, we can only do that once we have established how we want to take the game to opposing teams and as of now, that's still being built."

With just two weeks until the side's first home game at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, Hudson was asked how the team will look to attack that time.

"I've just said to the squad: 'I know many of you will be mentally and physically exhausted'. They have been through continuous, intense training blocks, with the vast majority of girls working alongside this.

"So, firstly, we need to rest.

"We'll have analysis on Monday, then a rest and from there we throw ourselves full force into training for Exeter".

With Tigers handing debuts to a number of signings over the summer, today's match was a chance for Welsh international Amelia Tutt to impress, the wing playing her first ever game for Leicester.

"I was very impressed; I was most impressed with her conduct and maturity on such young shoulders. On Thursday, she came to us and outlined what she felt she could give to the team and we saw that today.

"We're going through an integrated return from injury for her and we're grateful she got 35 minutes this week (having come back on with 15 minutes remaining).

"We can certainly hope to see more from her in the next couple of weeks.

"Across the whole squad, I see their experience growing, certainly. We have one of, if not the, youngest squads in the entire league and we only see them getting better and better.

"They had a challenging Tuesday where they got their first telling off; I keep saying I want them to be physically robust and mentally resilient and although we're not quite there yet, it's something we're looking to build, in both areas"
