Jaco Taute is set to spend an extended period on the sideline after suffering a torn bicep in his left arm during the away game against Sale Sharks in Round 11 of the Gallagher Premiership.
Scans this week showed a disruption and, after meeting with a specialist, the Tigers centre will undergo exploratory surgery for further investigation and to help repair the damage
Taute is expected to be unavailable for up to three months.
Speaking about the loss of Taute, Geordan Murphy said: “It’s very disappointing for Jaco and all of us at the club.”
“Jaco had a delayed start to the season with a knee complaint but, since starting his career in Leicester has performed well for us in the midfield and provided a calm, experienced head in each game he has played.
“We know he will be diligent in his recovery and are hopeful of seeing him back in action this season but, will not be rushing anything that could see him have another disrupted pre-season programme.
“Jaco will continue to be a major voice in the squad during his rehabilitation, which we are lucky to have given his experience in the game.”
