Reaction: Cheika on Gloucester defeat

Leicester Tigers Head Coach Michael Cheika spoke following The Slater Cup match at Kingsholm Stadium against Gloucester Rugby in Round 11 of the 24/25 Gallagher Premiership season.

Cheika said there were clear improvements in his side's performance that saw Tigers take two competition points back to Leicester but was still disappointed not to come away with a win.

"I thought we deserved more out of that game than we got to be honest," Cheika said.

"We came here to win and have to look at a few areas there. We needed to be a bit better at line out, our kicking game could have been sharper so we've got to look at it to make sure we come away with more than two points."

Cheika praised the efforts of flankers Tommy Reffell and Olly Cracknell, who both braved illness to play, with the former going the full 80 minutes.

"Those boys have been in bed since Wednesday, but we needed them and I asked them to play and they did which was a special effort from both of them," said Cheika.

"I don't know how Tommy got through the 80 the way he did."

The two competition points mean Tigers sit in fourth position at full-time, with Saracens still to play Exeter Chiefs.

Cheika said his side had set a goal to qualify for the knockout stage of the Investec Champions Cup and to be in the top four at this point in the season.

"Wounded, yes, but we qualified in Europe and again, maybe we'll be slightly off our goal there but we're in the hunt going into the run-in," he said.

"We'll use this time to get guys some game time who need it, and work on the things we need to, to get where we want to go."

Mattioli Woods Welford Road will host the last senior Double Header of the 24/25 campaign next Saturday, February 1, when the women's side take on Gloucester-Hartpury in Round 16 of the PWR campaign and the men's team face Northampton Saints in the Premiership Rugby Cup.
