Ashton: My focus is on my role, not records

Chris Ashton admitted that desperation to be a part of the action is helping to drive the experienced outside-back.

The dual-international arrived at Leicester Tigers midway through the current campaign on a short-term deal and, since the first of his now five outings in green, red and white, has crossed for three tries.

Speaking about his time so far at the club, he said: “As cliche as it may sound, I am just grateful to be back playing.”

“I am enjoying being a part of this group and desperate to be involved every game.”

In his debut appearance, it was a try-saving effort that helped the side to a win over Northampton Saints.

Against Irish, off the bench, he crossed for his debut score.

On Sunday, in just his second start for the side, Ashton crossed for a double in the away win over Exeter Chiefs.

With that brace, the 33-year-old equalled the Premiership record of 92 tries - held by former Tiger Tom Varndell.

When asked about the milestone moment, Ashton said it was not yet something to celebrate.

“There is a word in the way there, I’ve only equalled it,” he said.

“I obviously know that it is there within reach but I try not to think about it, it isn’t about a record and it isn’t about me.

“This is a good team, so there is always going to be opportunities for tries and my role in the group is to finish off those opportunities we create.”

The away win over Exeter - a first for the club in seven attempts at Sandy Park - secures a place in this season’s play-offs for Ashton and his team-mates.

But, according to the speedster, you wouldn’t know it.

“I think we’ve all just learned that information with people asking us how we feel about securing a semi-final spot,” Ashton said.

“Looking at it from the outside in the past couple of seasons, you would think everyone would be celebrating it.

“But, honestly, there isn’t a single word being said about it. I have not heard one person mention finals, even wins, it is just all about performance.

“The fact there is none of that is a great, great thing. The focus is just on being better.”

Ashton received 32% of the vote via the Tigers App to be voted Fans’ Favourite in the Round 21 fixture, beating out Julián Montoya [19%] and Freddie Steward [14%].
