We're making progress says coach

Head coach Heyneke Meyer was happy to get a first pre-season win on the board for Leicester Tigers at the Ospreys on Saturday, but says there are more improvements to be made.

"The more experienced players and the international players were back for this game and I was quite impressed with them," said Meyer. "There were still a lot of errors but I am just pleased with how we did on some of the things that we have worked on in training.

"It was a better performance, but there is a long way to go and we can get better.”

Wing Will Hurrell scored his third try in two pre-season matches following his double in Biarritz, with full-back Matt Smith also touching down in the first half and a penalty try near the end sealing a 30-17 victory for Tigers in a testimonial match for Ospreys and Wales wing Shane Williams in front of a 7,000-strong crowd.

Centre Aaron Mauger, who captained Tigers for the first time, said: “It has been pretty tough in training but it is starting to pay off. The guys are getting through a lot of work and the concentration levels are better because they are not as tired.”

Ospreys fielded a different starting XV in each half, while Meyer gave a run-out to most of his bench in Leicester’s penultimate pre-season fixture. Mauger left the field briefly in the first half, but quickly returned to the action and said afterwards: “I got a bang on the leg but I didn’t want to spend five hours on the coach for just 20 minutes on the pitch!”
