Academy back row leads England

Figure image
Leicester Tigers back row Charlie Beckett will captain the England Under-18 side against South Africa in Stellenbosch on Saturday, in the final game of their summer tour.

England head coach John Fletcher said: “Charlie is a natural leader, he is respected and will lead the side well.”

Club colleagues Owen Hills and Joe Maksymiw are among the replacements.

England have won both of their matches far, against Wales and France, but Fletcher says playing the South Africans in their own backyard will be a huge test.

“We know what to expect – they’ll be big, they’ll be strong and they’ll be direct,” he said. “But we have our own game plan and we’ll be looking to take the game to them, but we’re under no illusions, it’ll be a tough game. We’ve had a good tour and the lads have been great.”

The history between the two sides is written in folklore, the respect is mutual, and with the likes of Handré Pollard and Julián Montoya in Tigers ranks, it's hard to describe this fixture as a friendly.
