Leicester Tigers are proud to announce the inclusion of Bangkok Lions as their latest Global Partner Club, which currently comprises of six clubs from around the world.
Based in Thailand’s capital, the Bangkok Lions Rugby Club, or locally known as the BKK Lions, is predominantly a youth rugby club which was set-up by retired rugby players and ex-pats to create opportunities for young players to play rugby.
With a population of more than eight million, Bangkok is a truly multi-national city which, through rugby is now home to one of the countries prominent rugby clubs.
Bangkok Lions joins other clubs including Kuala Lumpur Tigers (Malaysia), Dendermonde RFC (Belgium), Delhi Hurricanes (India) and Rugby Colorno (Italy) and RC DIOK (Holland) as the #TigersFamily continues to support opportunities for the game to grow around the world.
The two clubs have been in talks for 12 months having first been introduced at the Kuala Lumpur Tigers festival 2019.
Recognising the success of Leicester Tigers first-ever Global Partner Club in helping to grow participation and awareness in Malaysia, both club’s will be looking to replicate this model to grow the game further in Thailand and beyond.
Scott Clarke, head of community and global partnerships, said: “Supported by close relationships to schools, the Lions uniquely focus solely on the junior game, providing a platform for youngsters to get involved in a nurturing environment which supports their development.
“Strong family values and a desire to build on what they already do led to the next stage of becoming a Tigers Global Partner and we look forward to supporting them in 2020 with coach development and building a wider offer to the community to include a Tigers Rugby Camp for the first time in Thailand.”
