Pupils give wheelchair rugby a try

Year 7 to year 9 pupils at English Martyrs' Catholic School in Leicester have been enjoying wheelchair rugby taster sessions thanks to Leicester Tigers community teams.

A part of the club's special educational needs and disability (SEND) programmes, Tigers hosted a series of after school session for youngsters to take part in and experience wheelchair rugby for the first time.

Leicester Tigers Wheelchair Rugby team celebrated a successive league title earlier this year as the city continues to grow as the home of wheelchair rugby, hosting the King Power Quad Nations tournament between Team GB, Japan, Canada and France.

The club donated a number of wheelchairs for the pupils to try out the sport as they got to grips with the basics including manoeuvrability, passing and tackling.

Tigers SEND rugby development officer Gary Ayres delivered the sessions at the school and due to popularity, will be hosting follow up sessions at the school towards the end of the 2018/19 school year.

If you'd like to find out more about wheelchair rugby, are looking to introduce a new sport to your school, or looking to get involved in Tigers SEND programmes, contact Gary on email at [email protected] or visit the link below.
