Reaction: McKellar on Exeter defeat

Dan McKellar has reacted to Leicester Tigers 31-10 loss away to Exeter Chiefs in front of a sold-out Sandy Park.

A slow start by Tigers and an admittedly outstanding performance from the home side from minute one meant the Chiefs were in control early in the game and didn’t relent, save for a Tigers purple patch in the second half.

McKellar was clear in his assessment of the game.

“In any game of rugby, if you lose the majority of the collisions you will struggle to win anywhere but that’s certainly true at Sandy Park,” McKellar said.

“We showed some fight there in the second half, but the reality is we were not good enough tonight and Exeter were excellent.”

The loss means Tigers win streak stops at five, Leicester now looking forward to their New Year’s Eve clash against Bath at Mattioli Woods Welford Road,

“It’s about actions not words now,” McKellar said.

“We know we have the perfect opportunity to respond after Christmas in front of our own packed-out stadium, but the proof will be in the pudding now.

“As a group, coaches and players, it’s important now that we reflect honestly about why we didn’t turn up tonight and front up next week against a good Bath side.”

McKellar and his side host Bath Rugby up next, on New Year's Eve, in the first of back-to-back matchdays at Mattioli Woods Welford Road ahead of a January 6 Double Header at home for the men's and women's teams against London Saracens (Gallagher Premiership) and Harlequins (Allianz Premiership Women's Rugby).
