Despite running in nine tries and wrapping up the four-try bonus point in only 16 minutes, Premiership Rugby Cup lead coach Peter Hewat admitted the side "lost their way" a little bit in the 57-19 victory over Nottingham Rugby.
Speaking after the win at Mattioli Woods Welford Road, Hewat said: "I thought we built pressure really well early on in the game and then through some ill-discipline, we lost our way there a little bit."
"But, pleasingly, found our way again and got back in control to finish strongly. Momentum is always going to shift at some point and so, for this group, the lessons today are in what to do when that happens and how you deal with that change."
Asked about the performances of the predominantly young side, which included 20-year-old Finn Carnduff as captain and two debutants in Tubuna Make and Xavier Valentine, Hewat said: "We really gave those younger leaders like Finn [Carnduff], Joe [Woodward] the leadership roles to ensure they could see what it was like in the heat of the battle and gain that exposure in match conditions."
"It's good experience for them and good for us to strengthen the experience of those younger players.
"I thought Tubuna was good. It's an awesome experience for him, especially up front, and I'm really happy for Tubuna to make that first start."
Hewat also made mention of Joshua Manz who made a long-awaited return to action for the club after a length injury lay-off.
"It's also important to mention Josh Manz, who has been out of the game for about 19 months and not only got on to the field but came on and contributed really well to our finish."
When asked to sum up the day, the Tigers coach said: "Look, we're not fully satisfied with the game but we have won a game nine tries to three, gave some young players some important game time and got some valuable lessons into the group, it's a good day and we can be happy with that."
Leicester Tigers travel to Coventry in the final round of this season's Premiership Rugby Cup pool stages next Saturday, February 15.
