A Leicester Tigers Development side defeated Oxford University Rugby Club 31-6 at their famous Iffley Road ground on Wednesday night.
Leicester’s team, which featured a mixture of senior men’s and senior academy players as well as other development talent, scored five tries on the night, the team fighting off a spirited display from Oxford, particularly in the first half.
Indeed, it was the University club that got off to the better start of the two. In front of a buoyant student crowd, Oxford forced two early penalties which were successfully converted into three points.
Tigers began to turn the screw with their pack however, and earned good field position throughout the half with their strong set-piece.
Scrumhalf Sam Edwards was first to cross for Tigers, followed by tries from Jack Kinder and Morgan Meredith.
Tigers continued to pile on the pressure in tight in the second half, though Oxford gave as good as they get and almost forced their way over the line on a number of occasions.
Ultimately, Tigers maul and physicality proved too strong, and the side drove over two tries late in the game to seal a 31-6 victory.
