Duncan Stevens has lost 27kgs in nine months as he trains to take on 26 miles around the Big Apple on November 4 in aid of Get Kids Going, which provides specialist equipment to help get disabled children playing and taking part in sport.
Leicester-born Duncan, 38, a former pupil at Stoneygate and Uppingham schools, said: “I split my ribcage playing rugby when I was at school and it became a reason to stop playing sport. About 18 months ago a very good friend of mine was hit when she was cycling into work and it fractured her spine.
“She was in a spinal brace for a few months and weeks after it was removed she took on the London Marathon and did a personal best.
“I vowed to stop feeling sorry for myself and thought I would do it. After not having exercised for 19 years I began training in January. I would have been pushing it if I could run for 30 seconds but now I’ve lost 27kgs and have the running bug.”
