The popular #MeetTheFamily series is back for 2019 where we chat to Leicester Tigers fans about why they love coming to Welford Road.
Over the past few seasons, we’ve heard from fans from all walks of life about what Leicester Tigers means to them and some of their favourite memories from over the years.
Ahead of Tigers 34-16 win over Gloucester in the Gallagher Premiership, we chatted to Tigers fan Peter Wood and his partner Gurjit Matharu, who was attending her first ever rugby game.
Peter, who now lives in Essex, has followed Tigers for more than 30 years and says: “My first memories of Welford Road are from when I came down in the early 90's when I was about 11 years old.
Living outside of Leicester, I’ve seen Tigers play at a lot of stadiums around the country, but Welford Road is definitely the best club ground. This is proper rugby and it’s ours.”
“The ground has changed a bit since then, but the atmosphere is always brilliant on matchday.
Gurjit, who lives in East London, added: “It’s my first ever time at a rugby ground and Peter has always told me about Welford Road – and he wasn’t wrong.
“The atmosphere is brilliant already and he’s been teaching me the laws during our time together, so I’m hoping I can keep up.
“We’re stood literally next to the pitch and you can see, smell and hear everything the players are doing so you can’t get much closer to the action.”
We’ll be sharing more of our fan stories throughout the rest of the season so if you’re heading to a Tigers home game, be sure to keep an eye out for our #MeetTheFamily team.
