Leicester Tigers have welcomed thousands of city primary schoolchildren this week as part of Author Week.

The event has been hosted in the Premiership Suite in the Caterpillar Stand at Welford Road and aims to promote reading and improve literacy standards.

Around 4,000 children from 75 primary schools have attended, with top children’s authors conducting practical workshops and question and answer sessions. Activities range from creating fun characters to writing their own stories.

Leicester children’s writer Bali Rai, whose books include the popular Soccer Squad series, was among the author’s taking part. He said: “It has been fantastic. It has been lively and the children have had lots of ideas and have been getting involved. It’s about getting them into the whole idea of reading.”

Author Week forms part of an initiative called Whatever It Takes, which promotes reading among primary schools. Other authors taking part in the week’s activities include Anne Fine, Shoo Rayner and Chris Powling.
