Tigers mascot Leicester Tiger helped unveil a magnificent sand sculpture which has taken pride of place in the city centre.

Leicester Tiger was joined at the unveiling by Leicester City favourite Alan Birchenall, Leicestershire County Cricket Club mascot Charlie Fox and Solly the Lion, the mascot for the Special Olympics which is being held in Leicester.

The sports-themed sculpture was the work of world champions sculptor and artist Nicola Wood, of Markfield and is situated in St Peter’s Square at Highcross.

Sam French, Highcross marketing manager, said: “The sporting summer of 2009 is immensely important for Leicester as the host city of the Special Olympics, but also for the Back the Bid campaign, which hopes to bring the football World Cup to the city in 2018.”
