International round-up: Eight Tigers into final four

Leicester Tigers will have eight representatives in the 2023 Rugby World Cup semi-finals.

Julián Montoya, Ollie Chessum, Dan Cole, George Martin, Freddie Steward, Ben Youngs, Handré Pollard and Jasper Wiese progressed to the final four of the tournament following quarter-final victories for Argentina, England and South Africa over the weekend.

The Los Pumas were the first to qualify, on Saturday evening, led by Leicester hooker Montoya when they beat Wales 29-17 in Marseille.

Tommy Reffell was at his menacing best for the Welsh in defeat, which brought an end to a breakthrough tournament for the Tigers back-rower in which he has firmly established himself as one of the game's best openside flankers.

For Argentina, Montoya was monstrous in the twelve-point victory which set up a semi-final meeting with New Zealand after the All Blacks produced a memorable performance to knock out one of the tournament favourites in Ireland on Saturday evening.

On Sunday, England were the third side to confirm their spot in the semi-finals when they held on to defeat Fiji by six points, 30-24.

Chessum and Cole started for England in the quarter-final, while Martin came on as a replacement in the second half to help the national team secure the result in a tight fixture.

Meanwhile, in the final of the four quarter-finals, Handré Pollard came on as a replacement for South Africa in their win over France in Paris.

Pollard came on in the second half to help guide the Springboks to victory over the hosts 29-28.

Montoya and his Argentine teammates face New Zealand on Friday (October 20) before the five England Tigers take on Pollard, Wiese and South Africa on Saturday, October 21 in Paris.
